Why is My Car Heater Not Working?

Now that we’re into the colder months of the year, most motorists will begin turning up their heat. But what happens if you turn the knob and no heat comes out? As an experienced engine and heating repair specialist in Frederick, MD we wanted to take some time today to talk about some of the different reasons why your car’s heating isn’t working and how it can be fixed.

Not Enough Coolant

Your car uses coolant, usually a mixture of antifreeze and water, to cool down the temperature of your engine. During the winter when you turn your heat on this coolant is brought over from the engine to the heater core. If your heater is blowing out cool air, it could be because you’re too low on coolant. When you’re low on coolant, your engine won’t be able to send any to the heater core to create warm air.

Issues With Your Heater Core

Problems with your car’s heater are usually associated with problems with your heater core. Coolant may not be making its way to the heater core, the air from the blower motor may not be reaching it, or there may be a clog in the small tubing of the heater core. If your car isn’t blowing warm air, and your coolant level is good, then the issue may be with your heater core. Watch out for these four signs that you may have an issue with your heater core:

  • Fog inside your vehicle
  • A fruity, sweet-smelling odor
  • Your car is running through coolant quickly
  • Your engine is overheating

Broken or Clogged Heater Controls

If when you turn the knob, no heat comes out, it may be because the knob itself is broke. The heater control valve may also be broke. Your vehicle’s heater control valve is located underneath your hood, and it acts as the switch that turns your heat on and off. If your heater control valve is malfunctioning, you could be stuck with cold air coming out of your vents.
