What is ASE?

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, or the ASE, is an independent non-profit organization that promotes excellence in automotive repair and service. Since 1972 they’ve strived to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service by testing and certifying automotive professionals.

What is an ASE Certification?

It’s important to note that ASE certifies technicians, not repair facilities. When a technician is certified, it means that they’ve passed the ASE Certification exam as well as:

  • Had at least two years on the job training
  • OR one year on the job training and a two-year degree in automotive repair

These exams are difficult, only two out of every three technicians who take the test pass on their first attempt. There are eight tests for auto technicians alone:

  • Engine repair
  • Engine performance
  • Electrical/Electronic Systems
  • Brakes
  • Heating and Air Conditioning
  • Suspension and Steering
  • Manual Drive Train and Axles
  • Automatic Transmissions

Once they get their initial certification, it’s up to the technician to re-test every five years to remain certified.

How it Benefits You

When you work with an ASE certified technician, that means that your car is in the hands of the best of the best. These technicians are highly qualified and know what they’re doing. With so many options for auto service in Frederick, MD, and other parts of Maryland, an ASE seal will give you the peace of mind knowing that your car is being worked on by people who care about their craft.

Your car and its safety are important. That’s why it’s crucial to have a mechanic that knows what they’re doing and will not jeopardize your safety. Don’t be shy about asking a repair which technicians are ASE certified and which ones are not.
