What does a timing belt do?
The timing belt or timing chain is part of the engine. Its job is to help synchronize the rotation of the camshafts so that the engines valves will open and close during the cylinders intake and exhaust strokes.
It is imperative that when replacing a timing belt, whether it is because of cracking or wear and tear, the belt is at the correct distance and time periods. If this is not correctly done it could cost you a complete engine failure that may leave you stranded on the side of the road.
When do I need a timing belt replaced?
Failure can be caused by:
- wear and tear
- the teeth may have broken off
- it is cracked due to temperature changes
- it has been exposed to water and/or antifreeze
Check your owner’s manual for their recommendation of when to change your belt. It is important to keep in mind that the above factors could determine changing your belt sooner than recommended.
